A New Type of Teaching Degree
Posted by alex on August 15th, 2008
Becoming a certified Teacher is an incredibly difficult task that requires not only a top-notch education, but also the know-how to earn the proper certification and specialized skills that being a teacher require. Almost all traditional online schools offer teaching degrees including Masters and PhD programs, but oftentimes it’s difficult to balance the specific courses needed in becoming a teacher with the requirements that a typical Degree program demand.
This is why Achieveyourcareer.com has launched a partnership with Marygrove College. Marygrove’s Teachscape Degree program is designed for people working towards their teaching degree who have the time constraints of a full time member of the workforce, rather than a full time student. You will take 10 courses towards your Master’s and will be able to finish the degree in less than 2 years, taking only 2 courses per semester. The curriculum is designed for teachers who need to earn their Master’s degree without putting their jobs on hold. And Marygrove College’s track record speaks for itself as far as the success of its graduates.
Earning an Accredited Masters in Teaching is essential to anyone who wants to become a teacher, but most prospective students don’t even realize how many options they have when it comes to getting an education. Getting the right education is about options, and making sure that you make the right decisions could make all the difference when it comes to the success of your career.
Ultimate goals Significant in Choosing Online Ed
Posted by colettavw on July 31st, 2008
As a student of an on-line program, I fully appreciate the flexibility that the program provides. I am a working mother with a four-year degree under my belt. I chose my particular online program to achieve the skill sets necessary in my field. The reputation of the school is not as important in my case as the work I create and the education I receive from the program. The online program I attend is a match to my lifestyle and career goals; I can work from home, at any hour of the day or night, I have professors who are only an email away and who are very proficient with the computer as a means of communication and I work at my own pace–not at the pace of the slowest student in the room. Feedback is often received the same day an assignment is submitted and this adds to the value of the study. Students considering an online education should take in to consideration the intrinsic value that an online education provides.
Choosing Your Program
Posted by Jen Zeman on July 13th, 2008
Choosing the best online program starts with realizing exactly what discipline you want to study. Many colleges offer several different forms of business degrees online, but if business-type disciplines are not interesting to you, don’t settle. For instance, I was interested in becoming a paralegal so I researched the Internet for schools that offered bachelor’s degrees online for legal studies and I found one at the University of Maryland University College. For my master’s I wanted a liberal studies program and found one at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. Broaden your search outside of your resident state if you have to (I had to for the master’s degree). As online programs continue their gain in popularity, colleges and universities are offering a larger variety of programs online to meet the variety of needs and desires of students beyond the typical business degree. As you find programs that interest you, research the requirements of the program to determine if it is truly right for you.
Next week’s posting will discuss the financial aspects of going back to school.
The Disadvantages of Online Learning
Posted by mcjoshie99 on July 9th, 2008
While online learning has its advantages, there are some disadvantages as well:
Learners with little or no motivation or poor study habits may fall behind or even fail the course
Without the routine structure of a traditional classroom setting, students may get lost or confused about course activities and deadlines – Asking questions and anticipating deadlines is crucial.
Students may feel a lack of interaction from the instructor and their classmates
Instructor may not always be available when students are studying or need help
Slow Internet connections or older computers may make accessing course materials difficult
Managing computer files and online learning software can seem complex for students who are not computer savvy
Hands-on or lab work is difficult to simulate in an online setting.
Students have to wait for feedback until the instructor has reviewed their work and responded to it.
Certain employers do not acknowledge online learning. Students who want to work for a specific employer after graduation should be aware of the employer’s perspective about online education.
Balance Makes Perfect

I’m not going to lie to you. Getting your degree on line isn’t for everybody, and it isn’t a walk in the park. It takes dedication and most of all, discipline. For those of you who may be misled into thinking that you are going to be handed a diploma through the drive-thru degree program, think again. It is challenging, it is very legitimate and it is VERY worth every minute you spend doing it. But just like everything else; whatever you put into it is exactly what you will get out of it.
I highly recommend setting yourself up a schedule. There is no need to stress over it either. Pace yourself. Remember, balance is the key to everything in life. Try to set aside maybe two hours a day to do homework, or any combination of time that suits your schedule. This could even be doing it on the weekends. The great thing about an online degree is you can pop in and out of your classes any time of a 24 hour day. That is one point that I’m sure you will grasp very early on.
You will also have weekly deadlines to meet with your assignments. I highly recommend not getting behind on these. This is where the patience comes into play. If you allot yourself the two hours a day that I spoke of earlier, you will do just fine. After a few weeks go by, you will create a usable system and get into a rhythm. Before you know it, one month will pass, one semester will pass, then the next thing you know, you’ll be shaking hands with the dean of admissions with diploma in hand. That’s what will make it all worth it.Â
