Just like Jim Cramer says in his daily television show, “pick the best stock in the industry,” the same is true for online colleges. There are hundreds of online universities from state run colleges (UMASS Online) to Ivy leagues (Ecornell Online) offering online degrees and certificates from the comfort of your living room. University of Phoenix is the oldest online university and most renowned boasting over 280,000 students which has been educating students since 1976 and now offers over 170 US and Canadian campus locations.
University of Phoenix even has the benefit that NBA Star Shaquille O’neil graduated from the university with an MBA degree while taking classes online as well as at the West Los Angeles campus before he was traded from LA to Miami.
With over 100 degree programs from Associates to PhD degrees, students can find the degree they want to earn and take classes on their time. In the end, you can take classes at any university or online college but what you learn and your education will be based on the time and effort you put into your classes, assignments, and exams.

I am an employee in their mid 20’s. I graduated from a traditional college in 2004 and have been involved in the workforce ever since. I work and live in a major city so rent is expensive and transportation is completely reliant on a subway or bus. I work 9 hours a day, commute an hour both ways, and like to exercise regularly. Out of my 16 hour days, I don’t have much time for, well, anything.Â
One of my goals is to earn a Masters or MBA to further my career. It is an ambitious goal and one that is shared with many of America’s workforce, however, due to the inablity to get to a class or the financial stability to quit my job, it just isn’t feasable.  Over the past 6 months or so, I have slowly started to research tuition reimbursement, scholarships, and night school. While looking for this information, I found an article referencing the Northeastern Online MBA program. As I read, I found that not only did the Northeastern MBA program allow me to study completely online, it would allow me to earn an online degree that was flexible to my current schedule and lifestyle.Â
Not content with just learning about the Northeastern Online MBA program, I started to look for more schools that offered an online masters degree or an online MBA degree program, to my surprise I found over 50 universities and colleges offering a variety of online programs, including Harvard University!
I have yet to fill out online applications or actually speak to a representative about the opportunity, but its clear to me that earning an online masters degree could be the key to increasing my income and job security.

Millions of individuals have already discovered online education. This emerging form of learning has seen rapid growth in recent years, as new technologies have created an unprecedented capability for engaging, interactive instruction. And the numbers don’t lie: the online education industry has watched enrollment numbers grow by over 20% in each of the last 4 years. And it is anticipated that these numbers will continue to rise as more and more people learn of all the benefits an online degree can offer. For example, in the next 5 years, online student enrollment is expected to double.
You can be at the forefront of this revolution in education by earning a degree from any number of online programs. Employers around the globe understand what a degree from these institutions means. Individuals who study online know how to balance responsibilities, and they take pride in their work; often times, individuals too busy to attend classes enroll in online programs to equip themselves with the tools necessary to bring their career to the next level. Individuals who study online are committed to learning, and they are resourceful; they understand the limitations of the traditional higher education and the benefits that an online program can offer. This is exactly the type of dedication and forward thinking that many employers seek. Of course, you are not furthering your education just for future employers. You are earning a degree for yourself. Here are 10 reasons why the best way to earn that degree is online:
- Increased flexibility means you can study online on your schedule
- Lower credit and tuition costs compared to a traditional 4 year college
- Classes start every 4-6 weeks
- Federal financial aid is available for students that decide to study 100% online
- A majority of colleges are accredited by their regional education accreditation board
- Earn a full degree in half the time of a traditional college (1-2 years for Associate degree, 2-3 years for a Bachelors degrees and 1-2 years for Masters/MBA degrees)
- Most online colleges will accept credits from other institutions
- Some colleges offer ground locations for face to face instruction
- Working adults can maintain their fulltime jobs, family obligations and earn the degree they need
- College students can take classes online that can transfer to their traditional college or university
