About National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month is a cooperation of nearly 1,200 national, state, and local agencies and organizations to encourage Americans to prepare their homes, businesses, schools and communities for disasters of all kinds. The goal of the month is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and to encourage individuals to take actions.  In 2007, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is sponsoring National Preparedness Month. FEMA Acting Regional Director Dennis Hunsinger explains the goal of National Preparedness Month is "engaging citizens in homeland security and disaster preparedness [as] a critical first step in effective government response and recovery efforts."
